Incident 2022-00002181: Apartment Fire, Westfield Borough

On 1/22/2022 @ 08:57, Dept 5 Crary Hose, Dept 16 Clymer Hose and Dept 26 Sabinsville Ambulance were dispatched to 364 East Main Street, Apartment A, Westfield Borough to the scene of a structure fire, reported apartment fire. Due to the nature of the initial report, RIT was immediately requested from Dept 3 Elkland by Captain 5-80 Andy Adams and Dept 6 Knoxville, Dept 20 Harrison Township, and Dept 17 Chatham were requested by Chief 5 Bill Goltz . Engine 5-3 responded with a crew of 6 and arrived on-scene at 09:03. Chief 16-10 Cale Mead arrived shortly before the engine and assessed the situation, determining that all responding units with the exception of Dept 5 could stand-by in-quarters.

Crews stretched a handline and assisted 16-10 with investigation. A fire had started on the range in the kitchen and had caught the cabinetry behind it on fire. A bystander took quick action prior to the arrival of fire personnel and had darkened the fire with an extinguisher. Firefighters used a water can to cool any hot spots, opened up a portion of the bulkhead above the stove using hand tools, and thermal imaging to verify there was no extension into the wall or ceiling. The fire was determined officially out at 09:12. Due to the temperatures, abbreviated ventilation was performed. Thank you to all who responded on a very cold morning.

Dept 5 would like to thank the bystander who’s name is not know at this time. The fire was less than a minute from extending into the wall and moving up an exhaust duct void into the ceiling. His quick action saved this multiple home dwelling. Occupants were warned of the fire by the building’s fire alarm system and no injuries occurred. Kudos to the landlord of this building for purchasing and maintaining an effective alarm system for the safety of their tenants. Working smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detectors not only save lives, but property as well. Check your batteries and test your alarms regularly.
