Incident 2021-00038733 – Auto Fire Alarm Escalated to Structure Fire

11/15/2021 @ 16:56 Dept 5 Crary Hose was dispatched to an Automatic Fire Alarm at the Riverside Manor, 250 Race Street in Westfield Borough. Engine 5-3 and Ladder 5-9 responded. Upon arrival, Captain 5-80 established command and firefighters made entry to find smoke in the first floor. Evacuation of tenants began immediately. Command escalated the call to a structure fire and mutual aid units from Dept 16 Clymer Hose, Dept 6 Knoxville-Deerfield, Tioga County Fire Coordinator 1, Dept 3 Elkland for RIT Assignment, Dept 20 Harrison Township with Cascade, Dept 26 Sabinsville Ambulance and Dept 25 Valley Ambulance were dispatched at that time. Units were able to find the apartment that was the source of the smoke, made entry to the apartment where they encountered heavy smoke and heat conditions. Firefighters found the source to be a trash can with contents on fire and was quickly extinguished without extension. The fire appeared to be caused by smoking materials emptied from an ashtray into the trash can. Thankfully no injuries were reported. All Dept 5 units were available by 18:00 as the building was turned over to building maintenance.

Thank you to all of our members and mutual aid partners who responded and assisted us on this call.
